Alfa Romeo has been quietly moving forward planning the integration of electrification into its current lineup. For the first time since the 2022 Alfa Romeo Tonale was announced back in 2019, the electric hybrid SUV has been spotted on the streets during test rides. Originally, the automaker planned to release their newest SUV earlier this year but between the merger between FCA and Groupe PSA to create Stellantis the vehicle was delayed. Alfa Romeo’s new CEO Jean-Phillippe Imprato is setting high expectations for the company and the newest member of the Alfa Romeo lineup. Imparato was reportedly unhappy with the plug-in hybrid’s performance and wanted to see more from the first plug-in hybrid the company will offer.
The highly anticipated 2022 Alfa Romeo Tonale will join the two other vehicles in the Alfa Romeo lineup including the 2021 Giulia sedan and 2021 Stelvio SUV. The automaker made the decision to begin converting the brand towards electrification earlier this year and is moving forward at a rapid pace. With the times changing, and the world coming together to become eco-friendly, Alfa Romeo is committing towards converting to a fully electric and hybrid lineup. Alfa Romeo has been known for its top-of-the-line performance across all of its segments, all of the automaker’s vehicles have continually been awarded best-in-class in numerous classes. As we wait for the release of the 2022 Tonale, we can expect for the hybrid SUV to join the rest of the lineup and win multiple awards.
The 2022 Alfa Romeo Tonale will be based on the same platform as its cousin, the Jeep Compass. Moving into the electric market isn’t as simple as many think, this means changing both the vehicle’s core and the facility that builds them. The process is not fast or cheap, but the automaker is forging through for the sake of the environment. So, Alfa welcomes a helping hand from its new Stellantis family. Stellantis is now made up of 14 different brands including Fiat, Chrysler, Jeep, Ram, Maserati, Alfa Romeo and more. Stellantis, having the knowledge of the electric process it has already learned, plans to get Alfa Romeo up and running very quickly.
The 2022 Tonale plug-in-hybrid will carry a rear-mounted turbocharged 1.3-liter four-cylinder engine combined with a 243KW electric motor. The combination will produce an output of 240 horsepower, the automaker has yet to announce if the Tonale will adopt some type of high-performance trim. As the Tonale will be released only in a rear-wheel-drive trim, Alfa has hinted at a forward-wheel-drive with a dual-motor that could set performance above all of the competition in its segment. The Italian automaker has made the promise of keeping its iconic looks and heritage that has built the foundation for 110 years. Interested in driving an Alfa Romeo vehicle?
