Alfa Romeo Builds A New Electrified Platform
The world has come together to end the era of carbon emissions by pushing into the electric vehicle market. Alfa Romeo has now made a major move towards moving their focus towards electric vehicles. Alfa Romeo has been known for some of the most luxurious performance vehicles in its segment with their top-of-the-line Stelvio SUV and Giulia sedan that has won various awards since their debut. The Giorgio platform is what is currently underneath the Stelvio and Giulia, unfortunately, Alfa Romeo will drop the Billion-dollar platform they invested in for an all-new platform ready for electrification. While in the process of manufacturing their very first plug-in hybrid SUV with the 2022 Tonale, Alfa is laying out the future plans for the automaker.
Alfa Romeo’s Award-Winning Platform
Alfa Romeo will drop the glorified Giorgio platform that was used to build all of its Giulia sedan and Stelvio SUVs. A platform that landed both vehicles in Best-In-Class in various classes including, Standard Horsepower, Standard lb-ft of Torque, Standard Mph Top Speed, and Standard Seconds 0-60 Time AWD. Alfa Romeo brand CEO Jean-Philippe Imparato had stated his desire to push into the electric vehicle market, understanding it would not be easy or fast, Imparato wants to seize all opportunities he can and yet promise Alfa Romeo fans to not lose touch of its style and performance.
“We are working on the Large platform of Stellantis and we will no longer use the Giorgio. We must take advantage of the volumes to take all possible opportunities and bring an EV range to Alfa Romeo, but always with the touch of Alfa Romeo,” said Alfa Romeo brand CEO Jean-Philippe Imparato
With the decision to drop the Giorgio platform that currently underpins Alfa Romeo’s only two vehicles on the market, Alfa’s previous parent company Fiat Chrysler Automobiles lost millions of dollars in engineering it. Forbes reports that the Giorgio platform will not be abandoned completely, Stellantis will integrate it at some point into the rest of its lineup. Alfa Romeo continues to improve its 2022 Tonale powertrain at the request of Imparato, expressing he was not satisfied with the current powertrain’s performance. With the delay pushing back the 2022 Tonale back three months, the 2022 Tonale will be built on a platform shared with its cousin brand Jeep. Imparato says a new five-year plan and ten-year plans are being made to set the goals and expectations of the automaker. Ready to drive an Alfa Romeo? Visit us at Southern Alfa Romeo of Norfolk.
